What is a Sacroiliac Joint Injection?

The sacroiliac joints link your pelvis and lower spine. They're made up of the sacrum — the bony structure above your tailbone and below your lower vertebrae — and the top part (ilium) of your pelvis. There are sacroiliac joints in both the right and left sides of your lower back.

A sacroiliac joint injection is an injection of local anesthetic and a steroid medication into the sacroiliac joint. Due to the numbing medicine used during this procedure, you may experience temporary pain relief afterwards that may last several hours. Once the numbing medicine wears off, however, your pain will most likely return. The steroid medication may give longer lasting pain relief and usually begins working after 24-48 hours.

The injection is done to decrease the inflammation and/or swelling of nerves in the sacroiliac joint. The SI injection may reduce pain in your low back, groin, buttock and leg that can also be caused by the nerve inflammation/irritation or swelling in your sacroiliac joint.

Where is the sacroiliac joint located?

Your doctor will use a fluoroscope as well as their practiced knowledge of anatomy to effectively access the joint. SIJ pain is often caused by chronic arthritis that can cause pain to radiate into the lower back, hips, and buttocks. Pain in this area of the body can cause a great deal of discomfort and inconvenience because it is an essential part for sitting, standing, and most other activities.

What is a sacroiliac joint steroid injection procedure like?

The first step during your injection procedure will be to inject a local anesthetic that will numb the tissue and skin. Following the administration of the anesthetic, your doctor will insert a needle through the numbed tissue and into the sacroiliac joint.  It is at that point that the mixture of anesthetic and steroid will be injected into the injured area. You will immediately feel the effects of the anesthetic medication, which will last for a few hours. The steroidal medication will begin to take effect within 3-5 days of your procedure. The steroid's impact will last for anywhere from several days to a few months at a time, making sacroiliac joint steroid injections an excellent option for patients seeking long-lasting relief from arthritic pain.

Do I need any downtime to recover from my injection?

Recovery from your sacroiliac joint steroid injection is mostly very simple. You will need to avoid heat and lengthy exposures to water until the following day.
